Schnitzelhaus 294 Ninth Street (Folsom), San Francisco, CA 415.864.4038.

The Schnitzelhaus combines Bavarian and Austrian cooking and manages to do what many people believe impossible, serve large portions of extremely satisfying and tasty food without leaving the diner feeling "heavy" or "bloated," (probably the most frequent criticism of German food by non-believers).  The schnitzel is absolutely delicious, but so is the sauerbraten, wursts, knoedel, beef roll, and venison. 
 
They serve many great German beers, and in addition to serving the up-and-coming gruner veltleiner are the only place I have ever been to that serves gumpoldskirshner, an Austrian white riesling from the town of the same name just south of Vienna.
 
Note:  The Schnitzelhaus is located in the South of Market industrial area of San Francisco, an area that has a very down-at-the-heels look, but is quite safe and with ample street parking.  I think it is important to support our local German restaurants, which are apparently an endangered species.

I had the opportunity to dine at an exceptional German Restaurant in Dolores, Colorado this summer. It has been there since 1986. This authentic, family-owned and operated establishment has a full biergarten as well, in which I enjoyed one of their many imported German beers on tap, accompanied by an excellent pair of bratwurst and sauerkraut. The menu is authentic Bavarian cuisine, including a variety of schnitzels, bratwurst, knackwurst, etc. and the portions are enormous. The owner and chef is Rita Bergstrom. Edelweiss is a great place that brings so much not only to local German community, but also to Czech's, Slovack's, Polish and of course Americans from Chicagoland. They offer gourmet German food, the best place for schnitzel or golonka, a wide variety of German beer and live music entertainment. But the most imortantly, they bring German culture to America by organizing special events such as yoddeling contests, wear your best German attire contests. They host German bands, every couple weeks and organize great Oktoberfest feasts with food, beer and music specials. It is family owned by Michael and Annemarie Greipel, who moved here in the early 90’s.
The wait staff is mostly German or Bosnian immigrants. The food is exceptional and authentic. Michael is one of the chefs, the other is French, but German trained.
Annemarie makes the deserts; all home made and fantastic. The restaurant is decorated with family items from Germany.

I lived in Germany for 4 years and while there are many good German restaurants in the states, none is better than the Gasthaus.

I thought about kidnapping the owner and his staff, and forcing them to open a restaurant in Tulsa. Best German food we've had since leaving Germany. They also have a fine wine store in premise. The place is inside an old house, with a grubby whitewash exterior, but the inside is decorated like you'd expect a Baron to live in. Service there was the best I've had at any restaurant at any price. Excellent, worth a drive from Tulsa just to have dinner.

My husband and I just came back from Las Vegas. We went to the Hofbraeuhaus and found it overpriced and lousy food. The building is beautiful and the indoor beer garden very nice but the prices for bratwurst and a pretzel $9.., side of German potatoe salad undercooked was extra and had no flavor, sauerbraten was not marinated, red cabbage tasted too strongly of clove. We tried a relative new one, "Red Hen Cafe". It's run by a young intern from La Campagne in Cherry Hill and her husband. I had so much German food when I was growing up, I felt OD'd, but this was marvelous! Potato pancakes unlike you mother ever made, weiner schntizel so thin and crisp and red cabbage that was sweet and sour and we finished up with a piece of Hungarian cheese pie...everything we had was so beautifully done. Nothing was greasy. As an added bonus, it was a small 30 seat.restaurant with well-spaced tables and the music was classical...very romantic. We definitely are going to return. Oh yes, you must make reservations. We came in at 5:00pm, and they were already turning people away who didn't reserve. Even if you were getting take-out, you must call ahead. Red Hen is BYOW.

Margaret's on Sheridan Avenue in Tulsa is nasty, they serve what a hot dog slinger thinks is German. Highly NOT recommended, run far far away.

When we lived in PA, we frequently went to the Austrian Village in Rockledge, just northeast of Philadelphia. Although we've been told that the weiner schnitzel is pork, it is tender, tasty, and you get a large portion. You can add spaetzle (our favorite) along with other sides (2 with the platter). Beside the German fare, there are enough steaks and seafood to satisfy any other tastes in your party (the fried shrimp are good). There are usually German bands on the weekends. Larger groups require reservations.

We just had a german restaurant to open called Gasthaus. It is a small diner but the food there is real good. The owners name is Rosie Onderka and she is from Germany.
